This piece, titled “Shade”, is a non subjective piece that honestly has no main inspirations or themes other than the different shades of black and white. While creating, I was very drawn to the idea of the dark elements being in contrast with white strips or the lighter gradation of blacks. The use of charcoal and tape helped bring out those areas that are really dark as well as areas really white. As I continued to experiment with different elements and media, I began to be inspired not only by shades (black white and everything in between), but by the use of shapes and linear movement. This was then masked by tape and covered up by other medium to give my piece a sense of layers and complexity beyond what the eye can see. I was able to accomplish so many different forms and elements being without overwhelming. This idea of layering is something I can absolutely put into future pieces I create.
